National Museum of Scotland Isle of Lewis Chess Pieces in Beautiful Presentation Case (TH2001)
Made in England National Museum of Scotland Isle of Lewis. It's King Height is 3.5 inches (Full size). There are many variations of quality with Isle of Lewis chess set designs. Look for weight and detail as hallmarks of quality. This Isle of Lewis set is expertly made from crushed stone - they are substantially heavy and very detailed from laser scans of the originals.
The Viking hoard of ninety-three pieces, carved from walrus ivory and probably made in Scandinavia in the 12th century, were found 700 years later in a sand-dune at Uig on the island of Lewis in 1831. The craftsmanship varies from piece to piece but it is often the facial expressions that reveal their true quality. The hoard contained four distinct sets with some traces of dark red colouring on some of the pieces. The original pieces are currently owned by National Museums Scotland.
